This verse achieves a remarkable totality: the dišnê ʾereṣ ('the fat / prosperous ones of the earth' — the living powerful) bow alongside yôrĕdê ʿāpār ('those who go down to the dust' — the dead). No category of human being is excluded from this universal homage. The final clause, wĕnapšô lōʾ ḥiyyāh ('even he whose nephesh he could not keep alive'), is grammatically difficult and much debated, but most naturally refers to the utterly helpless — the one so devoid of resource that he cannot sustain his own life. It is the ultimate image of creaturely dependence: even the dead bow. FOG retains 'nephesh' to signal the full Hebraic anthropology; FOG Message renders 'themselves alive' for clarity.
