כִלְיוֹתָי (*kilyotai*, "my kidneys") was the Hebrew idiom for the innermost seat of conscience, moral counsel, and deep emotion — the organ of moral discernment and intuition, analogous to the modern "gut" but with explicitly moral weight (cf. Ps. 73:21; Jer. 11:20; 17:10). The idea is that in the silence of night — when the noise of the day's activity ceases — David's most interior self receives instruction from YHWH. This is wisdom that bypasses the rational mind and reaches the embodied core. FOG renders "inmost being" to convey embodied interiority without anatomical confusion; FOG Message uses "deepest self" to retain the visceral, non-cerebral quality of Hebrew moral formation.
