The verb *ragal* (רָגַל) literally means 'to go about on foot' — from *regel*, foot — vividly picturing the tale-bearer who circulates through a community spreading malicious gossip (cf. Lev. 19:16, 'Do not go about as a *rakil* among your people'). Slander is not passive; it moves on legs. The three negative clauses tighten progressively: from tongue-speech, to harmful *action* toward a *re'a* (companion, neighbour), to *herpah* (public shaming, reproach) against a *qarov* (near one, kinsman) — each circle drawing closer to home. FOG preserves the foot-image in 'go about'; FOG Message reaches for 'peddled' to capture the commercial trafficking quality of slander as a tradeable commodity.
