עָטַף (*'ataf*) means 'to faint' or 'to wrap/cover over' — the image is of the spirit (רוּחַ, *ruach*) collapsing inward, as if enveloped by its own weakness. Crucially, YHWH's counter-reality is knowledge of the *netivah* (נְתִיבָה), a well-worn track or foot-path — not a grand highway, but the intimate, granular ground David actually walks in daily life. God's knowledge is not abstract omniscience but personal familiarity with the specific terrain of one person's struggle.
