The image of 'devouring my people as they eat bread' (אֹכְלֵי עַמִּי אָכְלוּ לֶחֶם, *ochlei ammi achalu lechem*) is a scorching picture of economic and social exploitation — the powerful consuming the vulnerable as casually as a daily meal. The double use of the root אָכַל (*achal*, to eat/devour) creates biting wordplay: those who eat bread are, in the same breath, eating people. The phrase 'have not called upon YHWH' defines wickedness not primarily as ethical failure but as covenant rupture — the refusal to acknowledge YHWH in dependence and prayer.
