Footnotes
The psalm closes with a stunning reversal: the worshippers have been summoned to bless YHWH (vv. 1–2); now YHWH blesses them in return — and the source is *Tziyon*, the mountain where earth and heaven intersect. *Oseh shamayim va'aretz* (עֹשֵׂה שָׁמַיִם וָאָרֶץ) is a participial phrase — 'the Maker of skies and earth' — an ongoing identity, not merely a past act: He who is constantly creating is the One who blesses from Zion. *Shamayim* (שָׁמַיִם) in its ancient sense denotes the visible sky-dome, the physical cosmos above; FOG renders it 'skies' to honour that concrete cosmology. FOG Message uses 'heaven and earth' to draw out the full theological merism — the totality of all reality, seen and unseen — and to echo the great Aaronic benediction of Num. 6:24–26, which this verse typologically fulfils: YHWH blessing His people from His dwelling place. As the final Song of Ascents (Ps. 120–134), this psalm is both a liturgical send-off for pilgrims departing the temple and an eschatological promise: the blessing flows not from Zion alone but from the One whose creative sovereignty encompasses all things.
