Footnotes
Kodesh in this construction is grammatically ambiguous: it may function directionally—'toward the holy place' (the sanctuary)—or modally—'in holiness' (with consecrated hands). Most ancient interpreters, including the LXX (eis ta hagia), read it directionally, picturing the raised-hands gesture oriented toward the inner shrine. F.O.G. renders it directionally as 'toward the holy place,' grounding the act in physical temple space; F.O.G.M. uses 'toward the sanctuary,' which preserves both the spatial and the covenantal resonance—the place where Heaven and earth meet. The gesture itself, se'u yedekhem ('lift your hands'), is the classic posture of blessing and intercession throughout the Psalms (cf. Ps. 28:2; 63:4), mirroring the priestly benediction of Lev. 9:22.
