Footnotes
Gamal (גָּמַל) is a remarkably rich verb: to deal fully or completely with someone, to ripen (of fruit), to wean (of a child from milk), to repay or requite in kind. It conveys not a minimal response but a full, generous, completing act—what YHWH does covers the whole need. The psalm's movement is one of the most compressed and structurally perfect lament-to-praise arcs in the Psalter: four anguished cries of 'ad-anah ("how long?") resolve into a single settled vow of song. No resolution is narrated, no miracle is described—the shift is entirely internal, rooted in the remembered reality of chesed. F.O.G. uses "dealt bountifully" to stay close to the Hebrew idiom of gamal; F.O.G.M. uses "poured out His goodness" to emphasise the lavish, overflowing quality of God's generosity being celebrated—and to echo the outpoured Spirit imagery that runs throughout the Bible and most notably at Pentecost.
