Footnotes
The superscription Shir HaMa'alot—'Song of Ascents' or 'Song of the Going-Ups' (ma'alot from alah, 'to go up') heads Psalms 120–134, a collection likely sung by pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem for the three great feasts, or perhaps performed on the fifteen steps of the Temple court. The comparison to Mount Zion is not merely geological stability but covenantal rootedness: Zion is where Yahweh has set His Name and throne (Ps. 132:13–14), so to trust in Yahweh is to be as immovable as the mountain where He dwells.
