Translations
Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.
Our very being is more than satiated with the mockery of those at ease, with the contempt of the arrogant.
Our whole-being has had its fill and more, drowning in the ridicule of the comfortable, overwhelmed by the contempt of the proud.
We have endured much scorn from the arrogant, much contempt from the proud.
Footnotes
Nephesh, rendered 'being' in F.O.G., is one of the most layered words in Biblical Hebrew—literally 'throat,' it extends to breath, life, desire, and the whole animating self. 'Soul' alone flattens its embodied vitality; 'being' and whole-being attempts to honor its full-person force. HaShalivim are those who are at ease, undisturbed, cushioned by prosperity—their mockery is the careless cruelty of those who have never known want. Paired with ge'ionim, the arrogant or proud, the psalm sketches a two-layered portrait of the oppressor: the carelessly comfortable and the deliberately contemptuous.
