Have mercy on us, O LORD, have mercy, for we have endured much contempt.
Footnotes
Buz is contempt—the cold, dismissive disdain heaped by the powerful upon those they consider beneath notice. The verb sava'nu, normally used for the satisfied fullness of a good meal, is turned on its head: the community is gorged on shame against their will. F.O.G. renders this 'more than enough of contempt,' preserving the raw sufficiency-turned-revulsion; F.O.G.M. uses 'fed more than our fill of scorn' to keep the visceral, alimentary force of the image alive for the modern reader.
