Footnotes
This verse weaves deliberate sonic wordplay: sha'alu ("ask/pray"), shalom ("peace"), and yishlayu ("be at ease/prosper") share overlapping sounds and root associations, creating a chain virtually untranslatable without loss. Shalom is far richer than "peace" it denotes wholeness, completeness, flourishing, and right-relatedness. Yishlayu, from shalah, means to be undisturbed, at ease, and prospering. The interplay suggests that praying for Jerusalem's shalom is itself the path to personal flourishing. F.O.G. preserves shalom untranslated to honor its semantic fullness; F.O.G.M. unpacks both dimensions—security and thriving.
