What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue?
What shall be given to you, and what more done to you, O treacherous tongue?
What will be dealt to you and what more measured out against you, O tongue of treachery?
What will He do to you, and what will be added to you, O deceitful tongue?
Footnotes
Verses 3–4 form a single rhetorical unit: a juridical question (v.3) answered by divine verdict (v.4). The Hebrew is tersely third-person. "What will He give to you, and what will He add to you?" with YHWH implied as judge. The construction echoes ancient Near Eastern curse formulae, invoking escalating divine punishment. F.O.G. renders it as direct address to the tongue, making the indictment visceral; F.O.G.M. heightens the judicial register with "dealt" and "measured out," anticipating the scales-of-justice imagery latent in the form.
