These lines echo Hannah's song almost word for word (1 Samuel 2:8), rooting the Hallel in Israel's defining experience of divine reversal. *דָּל* (*dal*) means 'thin, frail, diminished' — one reduced by circumstance; *אֶבְיוֹן* (*evyon*) means 'destitute, craving' — one in chronic, grinding want. The *אַשְׁפֹּת* (*ashpot*) — the ash-heap or refuse-pile — was the lowest social location in an ancient village, where beggars sat beside discarded rubbish. Together the two terms paint the full spectrum of human destitution. The typological arc runs from Hannah to Mary's Magnificat (Luke 1:52), with every Passover Hallel singing this same reversal into Israel's memory.
