*Matteh lechem* (מַטֵּה לֶחֶם, 'staff of bread') is a vivid idiom for food as the support of life — the same phrase appears in Lev. 26:26 as a covenant curse for disobedience. The image is of a walking staff snapped in two: what once sustained you is suddenly gone. FOG Message's 'shattering every staff that bread had been' gives the metaphor a dynamic, rhetorical turn while remaining linguistically faithful.
