The *tehom* (תְּהוֹם) — the primordial deep — is the identical word used in Genesis 1:2 for the dark, unordered waters before creation. Its reappearance here deliberately evokes the chaos-before-order: the psalm is re-narrating creation from YHWH's perspective. The grammar of v.6 allows both 'the deep covered it' (deep as subject) and 'You covered it with the deep' (YHWH as subject) — FOG follows the Hebrew word order privileging 'the deep' as the grammatical subject; FOG Message makes YHWH the actor throughout, emphasising His agency over even primordial chaos.
