The *ṣēl nāṭûy* — 'stretched-out shadow' — is specifically the long shadow of late afternoon when the sun is low and darkness is imminent (cf. Ps. 109:23). It is not merely shade or coolness; it is the shadow of approaching night, of the dying day. This image of withering grass bookends the lament section (cf. v.4), forming a literary frame that encloses the psalmist's self-description in the imagery of transience before the psalm pivots sharply to YHWH's eternity in v.12.
