The superscription names both genre and speaker: *ʿānî* (the afflicted/poor one) is the same humble figure honoured throughout the Psalter, and the verb *yaʿăṭōp* (to faint, to be covered over, overwhelmed) places him at the point of extremity. *Śîaḥ* — rendered 'lament' in FOG and 'complaint' in FOG Message — carries the dual sense of anxious inner brooding and audible speech poured out from the gut; it is simultaneously meditation and protest. The verb *šāpaḵ* (to pour out) is used of blood, water, and — most poignantly — of the soul itself (Ps. 42:4; Lam. 2:19), giving the prayer a quality of total self-emptying before YHWH. FOG retains 'lament' for its liturgical depth; FOG Message uses 'complaint' for its raw directness.
