The Hebrew *peti* (פֶּתִי, 'simple') derives from the root *patah* (פָּתָה, 'to be open/wide'), denoting one whose mind is uncritically open — not yet hardened by either wisdom or folly, still impressionable and in the balance. *Chasar lev* (חֲסַר לֵב, literally 'lacking heart') is not about emotion but about the *lev* as the seat of thought, will, and moral judgment in Hebrew anthropology — the whole deliberating inner person. FOG renders 'lacks heart' to preserve this Hebraic embodied nuance; FOG Message uses 'lacking understanding' for contemporary clarity. Crucially, Folly extends the identical invitation in v.16 — the chapter is constructed so that only genuine discernment can tell the two voices apart.
