*Rephaim* (רְפָאִים) is a term with deep roots in Ugaritic and Canaanite literature, where it denotes the heroic dead inhabiting the underworld. In Hebrew usage it consistently refers to the shades of the deceased in Sheol (cf. Job 26:5; Ps. 88:10; Isa. 14:9). *Sheol* here is the ancient Israelite realm of the dead — shadowy, silent, utterly cut off from YHWH's presence and from life. The chapter closes with devastating irony: Folly's *qeru'eha* (קְרֻאֶיהָ, 'her called/invited guests' — the very same word used for those summoned to a feast) are not dining, they are dying. Her 'table' is a grave. FOG preserves 'Rephaim' to honour the ancient cosmological resonance; FOG Message renders 'the dead' for immediate clarity, allowing 'the depths of Sheol' to carry the remaining theological weight.
