חַבְלֵי חַטָּאתוֹ (*khavlei khat'ato*, 'cords/ropes of his sin') — חֶבֶל (*khevel*) is a rope or cord, but also the word for a measured allotment of land (a region bound off by a measuring line). The metaphor of being bound by one's own sin — not by an external jailer but by the internal logic of transgression itself — is one of Proverbs' most penetrating moral insights, and it echoes throughout the prophets and into Paul's language of bondage and liberation in Romans 6–7.
