The *alah* ('curse/oath') refers to a formal public oath of adjuration — a judicial pronouncement requiring anyone with knowledge of a crime to come forward and testify (cf. Leviticus 5:1, where failing to speak when under such an oath is itself a sin requiring atonement). The accomplice who stays silent falls under a self-incurred curse, having violated the covenant legal order. The proverb exposes complicit silence as a form of self-destruction — *sone nafsho*, 'hating his own *nephesh*/being.'
