The logic here is theologically provocative: schadenfreude at another's downfall can cause Elohim to relent from punishing that person — effectively making the gloating onlooker the graver offender. This reflects the covenantal understanding that YHWH's judgments are not mechanical and impersonal but relational and responsive to human posture. The one who gloats over an enemy's punishment usurps the divine prerogative of justice. FOG renders the Hebrew with careful literalism ('it be evil in His eyes'); FOG Message draws out the implication explicitly — that divine anger can redirect toward the one rejoicing — to make the warning viscerally clear.
