ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτόν deliberately echoes the ταπεινοφροσύνη (lowliness of mind) commanded in verse 3: the community is called to the very humility that Messiah Himself enacted in the most extreme form conceivable. θανάτου δὲ σταυροῦ—"even death on a cross"—is an emphatic addendum that would have jolted the original hearers; crucifixion was reserved for slaves and political insurrectionists and was the most shameful death in the Roman world. The descent across vv.6–8 is now complete: divine equality → slave form → obedient death → cross.
