The Hebrew text reads *nefesh adam* (נֶפֶשׁ אָדָם) — literally 'a human soul' — used here as a euphemism for a dead body. The phrase preserves the dignity of the deceased: even in death, what was once a living *nefesh* retains its identity as a human being. *Tamei* (ritually impure) is a cultic, not moral, state — these men are not sinners but people whose life circumstances have temporarily barred them from the sacred assembly. Their boldness in approaching Moshe and Aharon is itself instructive: when the existing law creates a painful gap, the faithful draw near to their mediator rather than walking away.
