*Nazir* (נָזִיר) derives from the root *nzr*, meaning 'to separate, to consecrate, to set apart.' The verb *yaphli'* (יַפְלִא) means 'to do something extraordinary or wondrous,' signalling that this vow is exceptional—a voluntary elevation beyond ordinary Israelite piety. Together they describe a radical self-consecration, analogous in some ways to priestly holiness but open to any Israelite, male or female.
