Footnotes
The *sotah* procedure (vv. 11–31) — from *sotah* (שׂוֹטָה), 'one who has strayed' — is among the most challenging passages in Torah. It addresses a husband who suspects infidelity but has no proof. Critically, in surrounding Ancient Near Eastern cultures a husband could unilaterally punish or kill a suspected adulteress; Israel's law instead removes the matter entirely from private male vengeance and places it before YHWH alone. The rite must be read within this protective, juridical framework — it is less an ordeal against women than a constraint upon husbands.
