The Merarites carry the structural skeleton of the Mishkan — the *kerashim* (frames/planks), *beriachim* (crossbars), *ammudim* (pillars), and *adanim* (bases/sockets). These are the heaviest components, which is why the Merarites alone receive wagons and oxen (Num. 7:8). By contrast, the Kehati receive nothing: their holy burdens must be borne on human shoulders, not wheeled transport. The holier the object, the more directly it must be carried by human bodies — a theology of incarnational proximity.
