*Arei miklat* (עָרֵי מִקְלָט) = cities of refuge/asylum. The root *k-l-t* carries the sense of absorbing or receiving in. That these cities are Levitical is theologically significant: the manslayer flees not merely to a safe zone but to a priestly city — a place where the holiness of YHWH mediates between guilt and justice. FOG preserves 'cities of refuge'; FOG Message adds the functional gloss 'for safety.'
