The Hebrew *mizrachah* (מִזְרָחָה) literally means "toward the sunrise" — not merely east as an abstract direction, but oriented to the daily rising of the sun. Combined with *kedmah* (eastward), the phrasing is emphatically directional. The two-and-a-half tribes who settled Transjordan face the sunrise — positioned outside the promised land proper, geographically oriented away from the Tabernacle at the centre of the camp. This liminal placement, facing outward, carries a quiet shadow: the tribes who chose comfort and conquered land before crossing have their faces turned away from the dwelling of YHWH. FOG renders "toward the sunrise"; FOG Message "facing the rising sun."
