The *kelei hakodesh* ('sacred vessels') sent into battle have long intrigued interpreters. Rashi identifies them as the Urim and Thummim—the oracular breastplate—used to inquire of YHWH during the campaign. The *chatzotzrot hateruah* ('alarm-trumpets') echo Numbers 10:9, where YHWH ordained the silver trumpets precisely for war against an adversary. The choice of Pinchas—not a military commander but the priest renowned for his zealous spearing of the Midianite woman at Peor—signals that this is a holy war requiring priestly leadership, not merely military strategy. His presence links cause and consequence: the Peor crisis begun in Numbers 25 is now being answered.
