The arithmetic of redemption: the Levites number 22,000 (v.39) and the firstborn number 22,273—leaving 273 unredeemed firstborn for whom a silver ransom must be paid (vv.46-51). The precision of the 273 excess is theologically deliberate: YHWH's accounting is exact, and no firstborn falls through the cracks of His provision. This redemption system formalises the ongoing *pidyon haben* (redemption of the firstborn son), still practised in Jewish tradition today. FOG Message draws out the typological echo: every firstborn must be redeemed—a pattern ultimately fulfilled in the one Firstborn who redeems all others (Rom. 8:29; Col. 1:15-18).
