The word *nes* normally means a "standard" or "banner" raised as a rallying signal. Here Korah's destroyed company serve as a *nes* of negative example — a raised monument to the cost of challenging YHWH's appointed order. Strikingly, the same root appears when Moses lifts the bronze serpent (Numbers 21:8–9): two lifted-up signs in the same wilderness narrative, one of judgment, one of healing. FOG renders it "sign" to preserve the ambiguity; FOG Message renders it "warning sign" to draw out the cautionary intent.
