Footnotes
רְאֵם (re'em) — Almost certainly the aurochs (Bos primigenius), the now-extinct ancestor of domestic cattle, which stood six feet at the shoulder and was the supreme symbol of untameable wild power in the ancient Near East, celebrated in both Ugaritic epic and the Hebrew Bible (Job 39:9–10; Ps. 29:6; 92:10; Deut. 33:17). The phrase כְּתוֹעֲפֹת רְאֵם (ke-to'afot re'em) is grammatically dense — תּוֹעֲפֹת may mean 'heights,' 'surpassing strength,' or 'horns.' The image evokes YHWH's Exodus-power as the irresistible, untameable charge of a wild aurochs — no divination, no king, no army can stand before it. FOG retains re'em for its untranslatable wildness; FOG Message renders 'wild ox' as the most accessible English equivalent.
