The thirty-day mourning period (*shloshim yom*, שְׁלֹשִׁים יוֹם) for Aharon mirrors that observed for Moshe (Deut. 34:8), marking him as a figure of national stature equal to the lawgiver. No such period is recorded for Miryam (v.1), a silence that has generated significant discussion. The chapter's deeper structure—Miryam's death, the water crisis, Aharon's death—forms a triptych of endings: the three great leaders of the wilderness generation are departing one by one, the land drawing ever closer even as those who led the people through the desert are denied its threshold.
