The text moves directly from Miryam's death to the water crisis with no recorded mourning period—contrast the thirty days mourned for Aharon (v.29) and Moshe (Deut. 34:8). Rabbinic tradition (Ta'anit 9a) links Miryam's death to the sudden loss of the miraculous water supply, seeing the two crises as causally connected. The 'first month' of the fortieth year places this narrative at a transitional hinge: the wilderness generation is ending, and its great leaders are departing before the land is entered. FOG preserves 'Miryam' and 'Tzin'; FOG Message uses traditional spellings 'Miriam' and 'Zin.'
