Dan's rearguard role is expressed by the Hebrew *me'asef* — literally 'gatherer' or 'rear-guard,' a term used of troops who sweep up the stragglers and protect the column's tail. In ancient Near Eastern military formation, the rear was an exposed and honourable position, not a place of shame. The description is notably terse — no expansion, no comment — perhaps reflecting the ambivalence toward Dan in the larger canon: Jacob's blessing assigns Dan both judgment and serpentine cunning (Gen. 49:16–17), and Dan is conspicuously absent from the sealed tribes in Revelation 7. But here, in the wilderness, Dan simply serves — faithfully holding the rear of YHWH's marching people.
