Hormah (חָרְמָה) is a place-name likely derived from *herem* — the word for sacred destruction or utter devotion. There is bitter wordplay here: the place where Israel intended to enact *herem* against Kena'an (the consecrated destruction of enemies) becomes the place where Israel itself is routed. The name will appear again in Num. 21:3 where Israel finally and decisively defeats the same enemies under the same name — a moment of covenantal reversal. The chapter that began with weeping (v. 1) ends with defeat: the tears of cowardice and the tears of consequence become one.
