The parenthetical note that *Hevron* (Hebron) predates *Tzo'an* (Zoan/Tanis), one of Egypt's most ancient cities, is a subtle claim: the promised land's roots run as deep as the greatest empire the scouts have ever known. More charged still is the location: Hevron is the site of the Cave of Machpelah, where Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are buried (Gen. 23; 49:29–32). The land promised to the patriarchs is now occupied by giants—the *Anaqim*—yet the patriarchal burial ground itself testifies that Yahweh's covenant claim on it is older than any current occupant.
