The covenant here is termed *'āmānāh* — a slightly different word from the standard *bĕrît*, derived from the root *'mn* (faithfulness/trustworthiness), carrying the sense of a solemn pledge or binding obligation. The written and sealed document that follows in ch. 10 is the legal instrument of covenant renewal. Crucially, this verse transforms lamentation into action: confession is not the terminus of the prayer but its launching-pad. Repentance that does not issue in renewed commitment remains incomplete.
