The plain of Ono lay roughly 35 miles northwest of Yerushalayim/Jerusalem, near the coastal lowlands—neutral territory, far from Nehemiah's support base and uncomfortably close to his opponents' sphere of influence. The Hebrew לָעֲשׂוֹת לִי רָעָה (la'asot li ra'ah), "to do me evil/harm," is Nehemiah's editorial aside, alerting the reader that the friendly overture masks a lethal agenda. FOG renders it "devising harm" to preserve the Hebrew idiom of calculated intent; FOG Message uses "scheming to harm" to sharpen the conspiratorial tone for a modern ear.
