Nehemiah's refusal operates on two levels simultaneously. Entering the Heikhal as a layman would constitute a sin against Torah—a sacrilege his opponents could immediately report to both the priesthood and the Persian authorities. And retreating as governor would shatter the morale of the entire community mid-project. The Hebrew phrase וּמִי כָמוֹנִי (umi chamoni), "who is like me?"—better rendered "who, being as I am"—is not arrogance but a statement of office and covenantal responsibility. FOG retains "Heikhal" to keep the sacred-space transgression foregrounded; FOG Message uses "sanctuary" to keep the spiritual stakes clear for a broader readership.
