נֹא אָמוֹן is the Egyptian city of Thebes — 'No' from Egyptian nw't (city) and 'Amon' the chief Egyptian deity. The F.O.G retains the Hebrew form; the F.O.G Message adds 'Thebes' for clarity. Thebes was sacked by Assyria itself under Ashurbanipal in 663 BC — a devastating irony: the conqueror of Thebes is told to look at what happened to Thebes. יְאֹרִים refers specifically to the Nile's canals and channels. חֵיל יָם ('rampart of the sea') uses יָם (sea), evoking the cosmic waters of chaos — suggesting that even mythic water-defences could not save Thebes.
