The Greek παῖς (pais) is deliberately ambiguous, meaning both "servant" and "boy/child" — and in Greco-Roman usage could describe a slave held in particular affection. The FOG renders "servant boy" to preserve this relational ambiguity; the FOG Message chooses "servant" to reflect the military household context. Notably, δεινῶς βασανιζόμενος ("terribly tormented") uses βασανίζω — the same verb the demons deploy in v.29 for eschatological torment — a detail that quietly links these two encounters across the chapter.
