ὑποκριτά (hypokritā) derives from the Greek theatre — literally 'one who answers from behind a mask,' i.e., a stage actor performing a role. The word carries the sense of deliberate performance and masked pretence, not mere inconsistency. F.O.G renders this 'play-actor' to recover the theatrical image; F.O.G Message uses 'hypocrite,' the word's established English descendant, which retains moral weight if not the original visual.
