τεθλιμμένη (tethlimmenē) is the perfect passive participle of θλίβω (thlibō) — the precise root from which θλῖψις (thlipsis, 'tribulation,' 'affliction,' 'pressure') derives. The road to life is not merely narrow but actively pressed, squeezed, and constricted — as if by external forces bearing down upon it. F.O.G renders this 'compressed' to preserve the physical-pressure sense; F.O.G Message uses 'hard-pressed' to capture both the constriction and the suffering-cost of discipleship. This single word quietly anticipates Yeshua's later call to take up a cross.
