Matthew attributes this to Jeremiah, though the passage draws primarily from Zechariah 11:12–13, with threads from Jeremiah 19 (the potter's broken vessel as judgment) and Jeremiah 32 (the prophetic field purchase). Ancient Jewish citation practice sometimes named the major prophet when weaving prophetic texts together; the Talmud (b. Bava Batra 14b) lists Jeremiah first in the prophetic canon.
