Matthew preserves the Aramaic form (λεμα σαβαχθανι rather than the Hebrew לָמָּה עֲזַבְתָּנִי of Psalm 22:1), indicating this was Yeshua's spoken Aramaic. This cry opens Psalm 22 — a psalm that begins in desolation and ends in cosmic vindication. The cry is both a genuine expression of bearing the world's sin-guilt in full and, for those with ears to hear, the announcement of the whole psalm including its triumphant conclusion.
