"The outer darkness" (τὸ σκότος τὸ ἐξώτερον) is a distinctively Matthean phrase appearing at 8:12, 22:13, and here — functioning as the spatial antithesis of the brilliantly lit feast within. To be cast into the outer darkness is to be excluded from the master's warmth, light, and joy. "Weeping and gnashing of teeth" (κλαυθμὸς καὶ βρυγμὸς τῶν ὀδόντων) is equally Matthean, appearing seven times — combining grief (κλαυθμός) with the rage or anguish conveyed by grinding teeth (βρυγμός).
