The word τραπεζίταις derives from τράπεζα ("table") — the table at which money-dealers sat to conduct exchange. F.O.G renders "money-changers" to preserve this etymological flavour and the visual of a transaction table; F.O.G Message uses "bankers" as the functionally equivalent modern term. The irony is sharp: even the most passive financial instrument — depositing for interest — would have been preferable to burial.
